The settings section had grown like a junk drawer. I restructured the hierarchy around users' mental models instead of our org chart.

The problem

The IA reflected us, not users

Every team added its own settings entry wherever it fit that sprint. The result made sense internally and to almost nobody else.

Why this matters: settings is where you find out if a designer can do structure. This was IA surgery with real stakes.
